Sponge hockey at The Huck

Teams sporting the colors of the National Hockey League Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings and Minnesota North Stars were on the Huck Olson Memorial Civic Center ice Saturday and Sunday to close out the 2007-08 tournament season for the Thief River Falls city arenas.
The professional-looking attire was worn by Canadian sponge hockey players from the Winnipeg, Manitoba, area. The late-season visit to Thief River Falls has become a tradition for the group.
The sport is organized ‘street’ hockey played on a regulation size rink with a sponge puck. Players wear soft-soled shoes instead of skates.
Just like regular hockey, teams put six players on the ice. But in the sponge portion of the sport, the line-ups include five forwards and a goalie - no defensemen. There is no offside rule and no checking. Penalties are called for tripping, high sticking, cross-checking, etc., similar to regulation hockey.
Original Six-Pack Challenge games at The Huck consisted of three 12-minute, running-time periods. Regulation time ties resulted in a 10-minute, sudden-death overtime period. Teams were vying for a Stanley Cup replica trophy.
Winnipeg claims to have the world’s largest sponge hockey league, with teams in men’s, youth, senior and co-ed programs.
Those visiting Thief River Falls over the weekend left their regular season team affiliations north of the border. Nearly 90 of them showed up at the Black Cat Sports Bar and Grill Friday night for a draft that dispersed the players for the tournament rosters.
